it’s morning and the birds sing

branches.jpg

It’s morning and the birds sing

and the air is white mist

among black branches

that looks as if it could leave a fine metallic dust behind

on everything it touches.

And summer lies beautiful and dying in the cold air.

And all I can think is

how much energy does it take to pump water out of a tank with semicircular sides radius 2 feet

and length 8 feet

if the tank is full of water to the top

and there’s a one-foot spigot on the top of the tank?

And how do I express

the width of the tank

in terms of x or y?

As animals make morning cries

I wonder

if I should go to the UNCA math lab and study this Sunday evening

instead of being at home

resting.

I did not dream last night

but I have dreamed before

of taking the tangent line

of a housecat.

And my friend once dreamed

of taking the tangent line

of a lightning bolt.
